Journal Submission Guidelines

Introduction for Authors

 The Journal of Korean Society for Geospatial Information Science (J. of Korean Soc. for GIS) is the official journal of Korean Society for Geospatial Information Sceince (KOGSIS). The J. of Korean Soc. for GIS was established for academic researches and technological exchanges on the acquisition or utilization of geospatial information. It promotes the improvement of the state‐of‐the‐art theories and technologies, and total or a part of the articles in this journal are abstracted in the field of national security, transportation, weather, urban studies, natural disasters, remote sensing, natural resources, computer science, landscape architecture, geography, cadaster, underground facilities, surveying, statistics, environment, etc.

 The present journal was initially launched in June, 1993 and it is published quarterly in March, June, September, and December each year. Additionally, it is freely available to query and download the full‐text in both PDF and XML format through the web of KOGSIS (URL: http:/www.kogsis.or.kr) because the J. of Korean Soc. for GIS follows the open access journal policy. Total or a part of the articles in this journal are abstracted in Korea Citation Index (KCI) and DOI/Crossref.

1. Preface

Please refer to the following instructions to submit a manuscript for peer review to the Journal of Korean Society for Geospatial Information Science. Authors submitting a new manuscript must follow these instructions. Failure to do so will result in the manuscript being returned to the author.

2. Submission of Manuscripts

All manuscripts for peer-review should be electronically through the KOGIS online submission system (http://www.kogsis.or.kr). Submitting manuscripts as well as other correspondences regarding subscription can either be addressed by online via email (kogsis@kogsis.or.kr) or offline by sending a mail at Secretariat of Journal of Korean Society for Geospatial Information Science, 1417ho, Gwanak Century Tower, 1808, Nambusunhwan-ro, Gwanak-gu, Seoul, Republic of Korea (08787) (Tel: +82‐2‐3453‐0929, Fax: +82‐2‐888-1993)

 Manuscripts should be witten in Korean or English and prepare in terms of using either Hangul or MS-Word file. Including the first author, 50% or more of contributing authors of a manuscript must be consisted with members of KOGSIS who are paid‐in general membership for the presenting year. If a manuscript is accepted, authors may be asked to submit high-quality figures. The KOGSIS requires corresponding author to sign a copyright transfer agreement on behalf of all authors. Manuscript Submission Form including Author's Checklist and Copyright Agreement Form are available at the journal and website of the KOGSIS. Copyrights of the manuscripts published in this journal, is owned by the KOGSIS.

3. Forms of Publication and Submission Guidelines

3.1 Forms of publication

Publication types are peer review research paper, technical information, special feature, discussion, and reply regarding acquisitions and applications of geospatial information.

(1) Types of manuscript
Manuscript falls into five categories and their types and definitions are as follows:

A. Research paper: This form of publication represents original research articles on the related fields of study in the Journal of Korean Society for Geospatial Information Science that includes results of high academic values and conclusions or facts.

B. Technical information: This form of publication represents technical reports on the related fields of study in the Journal of Korean Society for Geospatial Information Science that includes practical and unique contents, inspiration on new issues, and supplementary or modified information on pre‐published papers.

C. Special feature: This form of publication is timely commissioned by the editorial board of the Journal of Korean Society for Geospatial Information Science and the committee selects the relevant themes and authors specifically.

D. Discussion: This form of publication represents critical comments for correcting errors of published facts and for providing alternative interpretations of published data. However, published papers should be the ones that are published within two years.

E. Reply: This form of publication represents the corresponding paper made by the original author in regards to the discussion.

(2) Prohibition of duplicate publications
Manuscripts submitted to this journal must be ones that have not been previously published in other academic journals or any other publication.

3.2 Manuscript cover

Provide a manuscript cover that states type, title, and author’s affiliation. Place an asterisk after the name of the corresponding author in the upper right corner, and underneath, provide his/hers personal information (address, contact, Fax number, email, etc.).

3.3 Length of manuscript

Research paper, technical information, and special feature or discussion should be printed within 10 pages (approximately 15,000 characters), 4 pages (approximately 6,000 characters), and 4 pages (approximately 6,000 characters) respectively including tables and figures. Additional pages can still be published when approved by the editorial committee however the pages being added this time should be charged to the authors. In this case, it is not allowed to exceed more than 50% of the aforementioned length.

3.4 Preparation of manuscript

(1) Types of letters
Use only English. Use of alternative language is possible when using words that are specifically difficult or semantically confusable to be designated by English such as names of a person, geographic location, journal or substance and academic terminology.

(2) Paper format
Prepare a manuscript preferably using word processor with two‐columns and on an A4 (210x297mm) page format. Margins are required in top and bottom, left and right and also double spacing is required for the reviewers easy to read the article. Authors can use the template file in format with MS-Word which was provided at website of KOGSIS for preparation of manuscript.

(3) Terminology and symbols
In case of referring to a terminology or symbol which has already enacted by the Society, it should be following the latest version; otherwise, a terminology or symbol which is widely used in the relevant field of professions should be referred. A symbol should be defined by a sentence where that symbol was first used.

(4) Units
The metric system (SI Units) will be employed throughout a manuscript except in cases where other units are conventionally necessary or an approval of the Editor‐in‐Chief needs to be addressed.

3.5 Manuscript format

3.6 Writing of manuscript

(1) Title
The title of a manuscript should be able to express the contents in a precise and concise manner. The first character of each word should be capitalized except articles, prepositions and conjunctions.

(2) Names of Authors
First names should be followed by family names. Information on the authors’ membership, affiliation or position and email should be presented at the bottom of the first page as a footnote; in case of a non‐member, the representation of the membership will be omitted; in case of two or more co‐authors, the author appeared in the very front is considered as the first author; in case of the first author being different from the corresponding author, the status of corresponding author should be designated before the status of membership.

(3) Abstract & Keywords
Provide a concise description of the main body and conclusion with 150‐200 words. Tables, formulas, and references in the body text should not be included in an abstract and it should be provided with a complete paragraph. The abstract is headed with the word ‘Abstract’. Keywords should be given from 4 to 6 words. The abstract should include information on goals, method and results of the research.

(4) Body

A. Introduction
The introduction should supply sufficient information to outline the background and purpose of the study, current trends related to the study, scopes and assumptions and overview of the manuscript.

B. Main body
The main body should describe underlying theory, assumptions and conditions and methodology as well as theoretical analysis, experimental or calculative results and discussions.

C. Conclusion
The conclusion should summarize the most notable experimental results and present conclusions along with future research subjects if possible.

D. Notation of tables and figures

I. Each table and figure should be prepared self‐informative without readers’ needs to investigate further details in the text.

II.Tables and figures should be numbered consecutively in the sequence mentioned in the text. If more than two tables or figures are used under same title, subheadings should be applied by using (a), (b), (c)…

III. A period is not needed at the end of each table or figure.

E. Formulas

I. Provide formulas not within sentences but on a separate row.

II. Formulas should be numbered on the right end of the row consecutively in the sequence mentioned in the text regardless of the order of chapter or section of the body text, and all parameters in the formulas should be clearly explained.

F. Citations of tables, figures, and formulas
All tables, figures and formulas should be cited in the main body as following examples;

G. Citations of references

I. List all the author’s family names if there are one or two authors; for three or more, only the first author’s one is listed.
(e.g.) Kim(2001) has…, Hong and Lee(2003) have…, Park et al.(2003) have…, Theories(Kim, 2001; Hong and Lee, 2003; Park et al., 2003)

II.For the references of the same authors and year of publication, place a, b or c after the year of publication.

(5) Acknowledgements
To keep blind reviews, authors are asked not to include acknowledgments in manuscripts submitted for peer reviews. After a manuscript is accepted for publication, the authors will be encouraged to insert appropriate acknowledgments. Specify contributions for the paper, such as administrative support, technical assistance, critical reviews of the manuscript and financial support.

A. Citation orders

I. Provide references in English. However, the original language (Korean, English, German, French, Japanese, Chinese, etc.) can be additionally provided when necessary.

II. Provide references based on the first author’s family name in alphabetical order.

VIII. All the author’s names should be provided. If the number of authors is five or more, they can be simply addressed.

4. Manuscript Submission and Publication

4.1 Deadline

Manuscripts of research papers, technical information, and special features can be submitted at any time. Manuscripts of discussion should be submitted within six months of the published article and manuscripts of the corresponding reply should be submitted within three months of request from the editorial board. However, if an author request an extension in prior to the deadline, the submission deadline may be extended with the consent of the editorial board. A discussion is generally published along with a reply. If the original author of the discussion does not submit a reply, the discussion can solely be published.

4.2 Manuscript reception and submission

Submit a manuscript in an original file including figures, tables and formulas and an application form should be accompanied. The date of submission to the editorial board will be registered as the date of arrival of the manuscript and the date of acceptance will be registered as the date when the screening is finished.

4.3 Publication order

The order of publication of the submitted manuscripts is equivalent to the order of submissions unless unavoidable exceptions are made by the editorial board thorough the screening processes.

4.4 Return of Manuscript

Submitted manuscripts will be returned to the author if they do not comply with the submission regulations or do not come in the category referred in the Section 3.1.

5. Peer‐Review Process

All manuscripts are treated as confidential and peer‐reviewed by three anonymous reviewers who are affiliated professionals such as professors, doctorate holders or professional engineers in the related field of subject of the submitted manuscript. All reviewers will be recommended by the associate editors and finally selected by the Editor‐in‐Chief.
 The identities and affiliations of authors are not provided to reviewers, nor are reviewers' name disclosed to authors. Letters including review result to Editor-in-Chief are double checked and then reported to authors on the decision of the editorial board. The corresponding author is notified as soon as possible of the Editor-in-Chief's decision to accept, reject, or request revision of manuscripts. When the final revised manuscript is completely acceptable according to the KOGSIS format and criteria, it is scheduled for publication in the next available issue. Rejected papers will not be peer-reviewed again.

6. Revision of Manuscripts

When the manuscripts are returned to authors for revision, point-to-point replies to the comments given by the reviewers should be submitted. Manuscripts accepted for publication will be returned to the authors for final editing before being placed in the queue for publication. If the revised paper is not received within one month from decision, the manuscript is considered to have withdrawn.

7. Screening and Publication Charge

7.1 Screening fee

The screening fee is Korean Won, ₩60,000 per one research paper, technical information, discussion or reply. Any member who is behind his/her dues will not be able to submit a manuscript unless the dues are paid.

7.2 Publication fee

The publication fee for each regular article is Korean Won, ₩200,000 up to 10 pages, and an additional fee based on an actual expense can be charged regarding the following cases.

(1) For printing in colors

(2) For copper plate printing

(3) For revising or modifying figures

(4) For requesting additional copies of reprints more than 20 copies or a cover of the copy

(5) Korean Won, ₩50,000 per every additional page that exceeded the initial 10 pages

8. The Processing of Publication Ethics Infringement

8.1 After recognizing publication ethics violations, the editorial board plans to take the following actions against the authors:

(1) A letter to the authors covering the details of misconduct and an elaboration on the ethics.

(2) An official letter of complaint to the head of the author's department or funding agency.

(3) A three year imposition of formal embargo to the authors responsible for such violation contributions.

(4) A formal retraction or withdrawal of publication from the journal.

(5) A report of the case itself and its outcome to the National Research Foundation of Korea and the Korean Federation of Science and Technology Society.

8.2 In order to avoid the publishing of duplicated papers and or to prevent plagiarism, in accordance with the publication ethics, the editorial board runs a plagiarism screening service entitled “CrossCheck.”

8.3 Authorship

The authorship should be restricted to those who should meet any of the following conditions.

(1) Substantial contribution to the conception and design of the study, or acquisition, interpretation and analysis of data.

(2) Drafting the article or revising it critically for the important intellectual contents.

(3) Final approval of the version to be published.

8.4 Article for publication ethics

All the manuscripts submitted should follow the code of ethics on the Article for Publication Ethics which established by the editorial board of KOGSIS. For the detailed policies on publication ethics not stated in this instruction, the Article for Pulication Ethics provided at the journal and website of KOGSIS can be applied to all the manuscripts submitted to J. of Korean Soc. for GIS.
 Conflicts related to publication ethics not covered by the Article of Publication Ethics will be discussed and resolved by the editorial board of J. of Korean Soc. for GIS according to the International Standards for the Editors and Authors issued by Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE, http://publicationethics.org).
