If Molière represented the doctors on the stage with a unfavourable regard, it was not because he had a grudge against them. This rancor was not caused by his private life There are another convincing causes. He distrusted the scholastic dogmatism which affected the most of the doctors of his time. He estimated the medical science in itself and the good doctors.
Molière could not accept the value imposed by the purely scholastic and speculative medicine which persisted in refusing new scientific discoveries despite of the change of the social consciousness. And this indictment of the doctors of his time is not a simple gesture against some profession or other. It was another glance of Molière librtin against those who have built a social class which became more and more exclusive. They wanted to confirm their highest place of the social order by means of their profession. And for this social ambition; they abandoned the nature of their art without scruple. For them the medicine was not any more a simple art to look after patients. It was to respect, to admire: it became an ideology. In his theater, with the medicine and the doctors, Molière has still made a fool of one of the social phenomena which deviated far from their own natures.
